The Challenge

Learning a new language is something that takes place with extensive, frequent, real world practice. Going from beginner to advanced in any language rarely takes place when a person is only in front of their computer or reading a book. Random House approached Smashing to help them envision and execute a comprehensive, multi-screen, multi-platform version of their already popular Living Language product. With a compressed timeline and high expectations, this was a challenge that we were ready to take on!

The Solution

Smashing worked in close collaboration with the Living Language team at Random House to design the UI for the online and tablet experiences that would effectively match the brand, allow for easy navigating of 46 lessons and associated content including games, and encourage use of the Platinum courses. This approach allows for a truly unique experience, where users can learn wherever and however they choose, whether online or on-the-go with an app, with a seamless UX that tracks progress and rewards your achievements. Beyond UI design, Smashing developed the mobile versions of the product for iOS and Android, in multiple languages including Spanish, French, German, Italian and Chinese with more to come.

The Results

Smashing took a cross platform approach to learning a new language to allow consumers to practice their skills whenever and wherever they want. Consumers can choose from multiple languages from whatever platform or device (or a combination), including online, iOS and Android devices. Using a four-step method of building a foundation, progression with confidence, retention, and achievement, Smashing created interactive game experiences like Flash Cards, Word Search, and Fill In The Blank for both web and mobile platforms to lead consumers though the lessons.
