The Challenge

Creating a definitive application on sharks is no easy feat, but when MyDiscovery asks you to be their partner on the endeavor, you know it will be a very deep dive into treacherous waters to bring these creatures to life on the iPad. Coupling that with an aggressive schedule and high expectations for launch before Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, the Smashing team assembled top studio talent to envision and execute a first-of-its-kind app experience that would get results.

The Process

Smashing worked in close collaboration with the MyDiscovery team to build an evergreen experience that would not only be relevant to the massive tentpole of Shark Week, but would be the de-facto, scalable, interactive-reference app on sharks to live beyond the airings. We built an end-to-end solution starting with an elegant UI that would enable users to easily navigate and access info on each of the 10 featured sharks, complemented by a rich UX, integrating custom interactive 3D models, over 250 photos, 3+ hours of video, interactive info-graphics, and GPS enabled shark-attack maps. We later added in-app purchase functionality, providing the ability to purchase an "attack-pack" featuring 5 new shark attack stories, with extensive additional content.
