A simple, scalable content management system that delivers entertainment content to a network of more than 100 websites in 22 languages worldwide.

The Short Of It
Our task was to create a simple, scalable tool to deliver entertainment content to a global market. Our solution was creating a large global content management system that brought Sony Pictures Television’s entertainment to life.

The Situation

A major television network had a problem. With websites all over the world, the time it was taking to localize programming and advertising in each market was consuming too many resources, not to mention diluting the value of the brand. To add complication, each local market had its own set of programming and advertising needs.
Seeking a solution that could consolidate and streamline content, executives at the network enlisted our team to help them design and create a CMS to deliver global programming and advertising to local markets.

The Challenge

We were tasked with developing a single, cohesive digital CMS that empowered country/region content managers to extend their administrative power and advertising reach. The platform needed to be extendable and allow for future growth beyond the web, while maintaining a cohesive brand identity across customizable presentations.

Our Approach

We partnered with country and regional offices in order to understand the varying needs and initiatives of diverse markets. From there we created an entirely new platform, built on established frameworks, that would support more than 100 websites in 22 languages worldwide.
With the issue of localization present, we implemented RSS and API capabilities that allowed content creators to feed programming to specific websites or regions, which included advertising feeds from third parties.

The Result

Built on a robust framework and with the aid of widgets, the new CMS had an easy-to-use interface that made it easy for anyone to learn. The new platform became one of the largest multi-site implementations in the world (to date) and gave managers a consistent grid-based design with default layouts that are easily customized per country and region. By supporting connections to all 11 major social networks through a single third-party service, the platform provides site managers the flexibility to add registration, sharing and activity feeds with ease, for social networking directly relevant to their markets.
Built with an eye towards the future, the platform continues to grow far beyond the initial offering, and is powering second screen applications, subscription video-on-demand, and TV everywhere experiences.
Speed to market was paramount, and now customized websites can be deployed worldwide in six weeks or less, with promotional content for new shows able to deploy across all regions in minutes. Over the course of a single year, the television powerhouse replaced all existing outdated sites with new sites under the unified platform.
An improved user experience, advertising kit, and administrative controls, enables the platform to deliver broadband content across native mobile and desktop applications from one source, allowing the network to engage with their customers no matter where they are.

Sony Pictures Television can engage with their customers no matter where they are.
