Digital Transformation

The journey from physical to digital.

For nearly 20 years, Smashing Ideas has worked with companies to innovate, validate, and deliver products, platforms, websites, and applications worldwide. Throughout this time, our digital agency has been at the forefront of digital transformation, partnering with clients to evolve their business from more traditional tried and true platforms into the ever-evolving digital ecosystem.

Digital transformation begins with taking the successes of physical products in market and adapting it to the new digital economy. It isn’t something you can just do…it requires a complete paradigm shift and a strategic partner highly versed in the process.

Our expertise in digital transformation brings together envisioning, digital value proposition creation, validation, and the realization of digital platforms, applications, websites, and connected products. It is based on our approach that centers around Motivational UX™, Lean UX, and Agile development practices, which helps clients determine the highest value product ideas quickly and will bring them to market efficiently. Through a digital product roadmap and close monitoring of data and analytics, they are evolved over time.

Whether you are in the initial stages of dreaming how your product will make its digital transformation or are already well underway with the development process, here are a few simple guidelines we use for success…

1.  Know your end-user.

Understanding your end-user is paramount in creating the right product. We begin by using behavioral archetypes, formulated through psychographic (including motivations), digital behavior, cultural trends, and technology trends.

2.  Have a realistic vision for monetization.

Start with the end in mind. A successful digital transformation must be shaped by a validated value proposition based on a deep understanding of customer pain points and needs, and go beyond selling an application in the App Store. Think big, creatively, and holistically about the full life-cycle of your product.

3.  Launch is just the beginning.

Unlike the deployment of physical products, when digital products are launched you are only at the beginning of their lifecycle. Start with a focus on MVP (minimum viable product – the simplest feature set required to realize customer value), so you can gain real-life feedback on use, adjust your roadmap, and rollout additional features as you go.

4.  On a related note…measurement is a daily thing.

One of the greatest benefits of technology is real-time reporting. Forget quarterly or annual reporting – once “live”, a well-instrumented analytics package and robust dashboard, coupled with direct customer feedback, event-triggered surveys, and additional tools at your disposal will allow for real-time updates targeted towards specific customer needs. Building this correctly allows you to segment and target audiences across your organization’s products, not just in a single experience.

5.  Agile and Lean UX are more than terminology.

Responding to change is critical in the process of digital transformation. By using Agile development we’re able to focus on delivering products faster. Couple that with a Lean approach that utilizes a design – prototype – validate cycle, and we’re able to learn from our ideas quickly, allowing for the transition from physical to digital to be relevant, user-centered, and timely.

We’re just getting started.
