Smashing Spotlight: Bill Wright, Technical Director

Wonder what makes Smashing Ideas so smashing? Our people! We sat down with Bill Wright, Technical Director, to talk shop, how Smashing Ideas is the rare digital agency that not only comes up with big ideas, but is able to turn them into reality, and the right set of circumstances that will bring out his hidden Robinson Crusoe.

You are another new addition to SI. What are your first impressions of our agency?

One of the first things I noticed about SI is the people. I have been impressed with the hard work, obvious competence, and the great attitude of everyone. It is a joy to come to work and trust the people you work with.

Smashing Ideas sets itself apart as an innovation agency that not only comes up with outside-the-box creative solutions, but has the development backing to make these ideas a reality. Do explain…

Being relatively new the agency world, I have been surprised with how few agencies take big ideas and turn them into reality. Most are idea generators or production houses, which often correlates into big ideas not being practical in real life. It is apparent that our clients appreciate that we not only have the design and creative skills to come up with innovative solutions, but develop and produce these solutions in-house. We work with our partners to discover what they need, how it will help them, and then we realize that solution with our development teams.

If you could redesign/rebuild one thing (technologically or otherwise) what would it be and why?

I have a lot of ideas, but if I could change something big I would create an extensive international transportation system. Imagine Elon Musk’s Hyperloop for local transport and supersonic ramjets for long distance. We need to think big to effect big change!

Technical Director – sounds important. How would you describe your job to someone not buzzing around our industry?

Well, my job is to find solutions, help teams figure out how to realize our goals for our partner’s products and identified goals, and adapt to situations that arise during development. I enjoy keeping up with new tools and technologies that help us accomplish our projects and create things that matter.

Development can be just as creative and inspiring as design and user experience. What inspires you to think outside of the box and where do your crazy brilliant ideas come from?

The people I work with inspire me. There is always a way to approach a problem or goal and I love to hear someone come up with something I have never heard of before. Collaborating with other teams is fun and we all want to create an environment that leads to success. I like to think we can do anything and everything, and I love it when we can come up with a clean, simple solution that makes a project work.

Favorite piece of technology and why?

All my friends would call me an Apple fan. It is true! They make things that work, and fit what I want to do. My computers, tablets, and phone that connect me to the internet and the larger world are something I would not want to live without. Now I am enjoying my Apple Watch! It is giving me that little bit more that I wanted from my devices.

As we approach the half-way mark for 2015, what are you most excited about from a technological perspective for the remainder of the year?

I am hoping to see Tesla bring out an electric vehicle for more of us. Their battery technology, related solar tech, and an affordable electric car could transform our economy and lives.

You’re stuck on a remote island, but can have one piece of technology with you. What would it be and why?

I would be practical and choose a satellite phone. Get me off this island! If the phone does not work I’m in trouble, but I will Robinson Crusoe my butt off!

We’ve been discussing the Apple Watch on our blog and have a variety of opinions within the agency. From your vantage point, is it a digital game-changer or passing fad?

I think it is a game changer, especially after using one for a few weeks now. However, it may be another transitional technology. I think many people might believe they do not need another device, but there are a few different ways it just makes sense and I have loved it.

I am, hands down, one of the best __________ that I know:

I am, hands down, one of the funniest people that I know. Not everyone gets my comedic genius, but they will!
